Friends with Disabilities is a great tool for having matter-of-fact conversations with your child about others who are different from them. These Play Figures can also help prepare your child to look out for other children’s safety and well-being by teaching them about the spectrum of ability.

Roleplay with your child to gauge their understanding of what it means to have a disability. Then, talk about the specific disability that each character has. Ask your child to think about everyday tasks that would have to be done differently by each character. Encourage them to also think of ways that each character would be able to help the others. You can also play through difficult situations such as when a child with a disability needs help or when other children are bullying someone who is different. Don’t be afraid to look up answers that questions that your child has–these conversations are opportunities to demonstrate how your child can continue to learn about this topic!

Each set includes a figure sitting in a wheelchair, a figure using forearm crutches, a figure wearing a cochlear implant, a figure with Down syndrome, and a figure wearing dark sunglasses and holding a white cane to aid visual impairment.
