Are you looking for fun (free) indoor activities to entertain your kids at home? Diversity In Toys has you covered! We’ve rounded up a list of creative, engaging ideas to keep your little ones occupied on a rainy or snowy day.

  1. Have a dance party: Turn up the music and let your kids burn off some energy by dancing and singing along. Make it into a game by having them come up with their own choreographed routine! This may help with rhythm building spacial issues, self confidence and relieve anxiety.
  2. Build a fort: Use blankets, pillows, and furniture to build a cozy fort for your kids to play in. They can read books, play with toys, or have a snack inside their very own fort. This activity may help with spacial planning and sensory issues.
  3. Have a baking day: Bake cookies, cakes, or any other treats with your kids. This is a fun way to spend time together and teach them some basic cooking (and math) skills.
  4. Play dress-up: Dig through your closet and create a dress-up box filled with costumes and props for your kids to play with. They can put on a fashion show or put on a play with their friends. Helps build self confidence and strengthen identity.
  5. Indoor treasure hunt: Hide small toys or treats around the house and give your kids clues to find them. This is a fun way to get them moving and exploring different parts of the house. Helps increase curiosity as well as problem solving – if done with friend/sibling can build cooperation skills.
  6. Build a pillow obstacle course: Create a fun obstacle course using pillows and couch cushions. Your kids can race each other or try to complete the course in a certain amount of time. Helps with building spacial planning skills, logic sequence.
  7. Have a movie marathon: Pop some popcorn and watch a series of movies together. You can even make it a themed marathon, such as a Harry Potter or Disney marathon. Movies are a form of art. Be sure to discuss the background details, music used to set the mood, costumes and more. Was the movie based on a book? If the kids read the book (in their fort maybe?) discuss and compare the book vs. the movie. This activity can help develop awareness, literary skills, communication skills, observation skills and personal choice skills.
  8. Indoor gardening: Grow your kids’ interest in nature by helping them start their own indoor garden. They can plant seeds, watch them grow, and take care of the plants. This activity is pure science. No soil handy no problem. Dampen a paper towel, place in a plastic bag and put bean on top. Place in a sunny/warm location. Watch the roots grow. Re-moisten when dry. Nature is amazing

These fun indoor activities for kids are sure to keep your little ones entertained and engaged. Many also open up the opportunity to talk with your kids and develop a sense of who these little beings are. So, next time you’re “stuck” inside, try out one of these ideas and have some quality time together.
