Shut the box is a colorful dice game that can be played with one or more players – with the ability to modify this game in so the whole family can enjoy this math skill enhancing game.

The objective of Shut the Box is to close all the numbered tiles on the game board.

1. Set up the game: The game is played with a special box that has a series of numbered tiles (usually 10). The tiles are hinged so they can be flipped up and down. To start the game, flip all the tiles so that they are in the “up” position.
2. Roll the dice: The game is played with two dice. On each turn, the player rolls the dice and adds up the total. For example, if the player rolls a 3 and a 5, the total is 8.
3. Flip tiles: The player then flips down any tiles that add up to the total of the dice roll. For example, if the player rolled an 8, they could flip down the tiles with the numbers 8, 7 and 1, 6 and 2, or 5 and 3.
4. Keep rolling: The player continues rolling the dice and flipping tiles until they are unable to flip any more tiles that add up to the dice roll.
5. Scoring: The player’s score is the total of the numbers on the tiles that are still in the “up” position. The goal is to have the lowest score possible.
6. Win condition: The winner is the player with the lowest score after everyone has taken the same number of turns.

There are many variations of shut the box, including different numbers of tiles, different win conditions, and different rules for how tiles can be flipped.

The bright colors, and soft (water resistant) flannel help make this a sensory pleasure to play and touch.  Base also has non-skid pads for stability on surfaces. With two colored dice per person, there is no fighting over “who has the dice”.
